Dr. Walter Chan is Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Motility at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. He completed medical school and residency training in internal medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, followed by gastroenterology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  He also received an MPH in clinical effectiveness from Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Chan is a gastroenterologist with clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal motility and esophageal disorders.  He provides inpatient and outpatient consulations at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and performs endoscopic procedures including diagnostic and therapeutic upper endoscopy and colonoscopy.  Dr. Chan specializes in diagnostic studies for gastrointestinal motility and functional disorders, including esophageal manometry, intraluminal impedance and pH monitoring, Bravo pH monitoring, wireless motility capsule (SmartPill) studies, anorectal manometry, functional luminal impedance planimetry (FLIP) and breath testing.  He also performs therapeutic endoscopic interventions for esophageal and motility conditions, such as endoluminal balloon dilation, pneumatic dilation, botulinum toxin injection, radiofrequency ablation, and cryotherapy.  He currently directs the Gastrointestinal Motility and Physiology Laboratory, located in the Endoscopy Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
